Libyan Speaker of Parliament Meets with Bourita Following Government Formation

Hours after receiving the initial vision of the form and structure of the Government of National Unity (GNU), the Libyan Speaker of Parliament, Aguila Saleh, will visit Morocco, today, Friday, February 26th, to meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a communiqué that Bourita will meet with the new Libyan Prime Minister, Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, this Friday, but Libyan reports revealed that Dabaiba will miss this meeting, as he apologized for not attending due to unknown reasons.

Dabaiba’s Official Spokesman, Mohammed Hammouda, said in a press statement that “Head of the Government of National Unity apologized for not being able to visit the Kingdom of Morocco because he was busy with internal affairs,” noting that he will “respond to the invitation as soon as possible.”

During a press conference in Tripoli, yesterday, Thursday, February 25th, Dabaiba presented GNU’s proposal and said that the competencies and consultations with all political spectrums were taken into account in the conception of the government’s structure which he presented to the Speaker of Parliament, Aguila Saleh.

He pointed out that he took into account the difficulties experienced by the Libyan people, continuing: “We relied on consulting with members of the Advisory Committee of Political Dialogue Forum, members of Parliament and the State Advisory Council.”

Dabaiba also stressed the continuation of support for national reconciliation between Libyans and the formation of committees to resolve existing crises, mainly related to Covid-19 and electricity, because Libyan people have endured difficult times, adding, “we are working to form a true Government of National Unity which represents Libyan people.”
