Bourita : the Sahara Related Meeting of PSC is an “Insignificant Event”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, confirmed yesterday, Friday in Rabat, that Morocco is not interested by the report issued after the meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (PSC), held on March 9th, on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

Bourita explained during a press conference after talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Guineans abroad, Ibrahim Khalil Kaba, that the matter is related to an “insignificant event” for Morocco, which is still persistent within the African Union within the framework of Resolution 693 of the Union.

The minister said, “This communication is the result of maneuvers and breaches marred the approval rule,” recalling in this context that the meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union took place on the 9th of March, while this document was issued on the 19th of the same month.

He emphasized that “during these ten days, the majority of the Council expressed its rejection of the Council’s conclusions in writing. It seems that the fait accompli has been imposed and the text has been amended.”

He pointed out that this meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union was marred by several violations in the first place and raised many question marks regarding its context, objectives and hidden motives, highlighting that the discussions showed that the African continent adopts a clear position; It is to support the efforts of the United Nations to find a solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

Bourita seized this opportunity to remind that the file of the Moroccan Sahara is before the United Nations, and that only the Tripartite Commission is empowered to pursue the issue of the Sahara.

The minister did not fail to emphasize Morocco’s satisfaction with the fact that the majority of the members of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, as well as the African Union Commission, are loyal to the legitimacy and legality, by defending during the Council’s summit on March 9th the validity and relevance of Resolution 693 of the African Union, as it is the only African Union framework for tracking the Sahara issue.

The minister added that the solution should reflect the national position of two-thirds of African countries that do not recognize the fictitious entity of the “Polisario” separatists, noting that the majority of countries on the continent support the Moroccan Sahara. “Therefore, we consider the matter an insignificant event.”

It is noteworthy that Resolution 693, adopted at the African Summit held in July 2018 in Nouakchott, reaffirmed the exclusive jurisdiction of the United Nations as a framework for searching for a solution to the fabricated regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, with the establishment of the troika mechanism to support the efforts of the United Nations to find a settlement to this conflict .
