The Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Parliament Rejects two Motions Hostile to the Territorial Integrity of Morocco

On March 24, 2021, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Parliament (Bundestag) rejected a motion by the Die Linke parliamentary group (left). All the parliamentary groups represented in the Commission rejected the text, with the exception of Die Linke, and the Greens, who abstained.

Under the deceiving title of “the application of international law in the Sahara occupied by Morocco”, the text of this motion openly adopted the language terminology of the propaganda advanced by Algeria and separatist “Polisario”, namely the alleged “occupation” of the Sahara, the “referendum” supposedly “intended to settle the conflict definitively”, and the “deterioration” of the human rights situation.

These hoaxes only sparked an objection from the Foreign Affairs Committee which demanded that the motion be rejected.

Likewise, the Foreign Affairs Committee rejected, on the same day, the motion introduced by the Green group, which stated the “need to open a political path towards a lasting peace in the Sahara”, thus taking up the illusion of war that Algeria and separatist “Polisario” seek to create at all costs.

In the same spirit of mystification, the text called on the German government to intensify its diplomatic efforts to consolidate the ceasefire by involving its European partners, in particular France, the African Union, and the United States. In due negligence of the fact that separatist “Polisario” was the one which announced its unilateral withdrawal from the ceasefire on November 14, 2020, and that the role of the AU has been definitively circumscribed to support the efforts of the Secretary General of the UN for the relaunch of the political process, only at the level of the Troika, by virtue of decision 693.

Again, all groups rejected this motion, with the exception of the Greens themselves and Die Linke, which abstained.

The exchange of good practices between the Greens and Die Linke testifies to the orchestrated nature of these two motions, introduced as part of the same propaganda campaign hatched by pro-Algeria and “Polisario” circles.

By rejecting the two motions, the German Parliament confirms its attachment to international legality, embodied by the reference system adopted by the Security Council to reach a realistic, pragmatic, lasting political solution, and based on the compromise to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara and its rejection of Algerian hoaxes.

The rejection of these two texts, on the same day, is a snub for Algeria which had placed all its hopes on lobbying within European parliaments, in particular in Germany, to try to compensate for the successive failures experienced in the field and in the United Nations in recent years.
