Covid-19: Eid al-Fitr In Morocco Under The State Of Health Emergency

The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs announced the prohibition of holding Eid Al-Fitr prayers due to the difficulty of providing conditions for physical distancing between worshipers.

Morocco has extended the night curfew and restrictions on travels between cities during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday, as part of precautionary measures against the Covid-19 pandemic, as has been stated in a government communiqué, today, Wednesday.

“The precautionary measures will continue to apply (…) throughout the days of Eid, whether it concerns the night curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. or the restriction of movement between cities”, the statement said, calling for “extra precautions” during the Eid holiday, which usually witnesses an increase in travel and family visits.

In the same context, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs announced the prohibition of holding Eid Al-Fitr prayers due to the difficulty of providing conditions for physical distancing between worshipers.

Last week, the government extended the state of health emergency until June 10th, while flights with about 50 countries have also been suspended for weeks due to the detection of new cases of the Indian Covid variant in the country.

These “precautionary measures have enabled a significant decrease” in the number of cases of the epidemic during the last four weeks, according to what the director of epidemiology at the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

It is noted that the total number of infections reached more than 514 thousand, according to the latest official toll, including 9,083 deaths.

On the other hand, more than 5.9 million people have benefited so far from the vaccination campaign launched by the Kingdom at the end of January, including more than 4.4 million who received the second dose.

Morocco, with a population of about 36 million, is betting on accelerating the vaccination campaign to get out of the health crisis and its economic repercussions.
