UN opens office for counter-terrorism and training in Africa

The opening of the Office of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism and Training Program in Africa, the first of its kind on the African continent.

The new office will work, according to a statement by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to develop and implement approved programs aimed primarily at developing and strengthening capabilities and skills in the field of combating terrorism, especially with regard to border security and its management, investigations and follow-ups, prison management, disengagement, rehabilitation and reintegration.

The statement added that this new regional office, which was inaugurated by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, Vladimir Voronkov , will rely on pooling the expertise of Morocco and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office in order to provide quality training for African countries, “according to a solidarity and participatory approach that reflects the spirit of collective responsibility.”

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita warned of terrorist threats sweeping across parts of the continent.

He added that the African continent witnessed only 7,108 attacks last year, causing 12,519 victims, noting that the Sahel and Sahara region has become the second most affected region by terrorism in the world.

The Program Office, as training center, aims at strengthening the capacities of member states through the development of National Training Programs and counter-terrorism training curricula, he said, noting that it will provide a significant contribution to support African states in their fight against terrorism.
