New year: Morocco tightens controls

Moroccan officials strengthened controls on entry and exit from cities a few days before New Year’s Eve as part of the measures in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Security checkpoints have been set up in several locations across the Kingdom, according to a reliable source, to verify suspicious cars and the identities of particular drivers. It’s also worth noting that the authorities have a tight grip on automobiles from neighboring cities.

As a recall, the government announced last Monday a number of steps to combat the spread of the new coronavirus that would be implemented from December 31, 2021 to January 1, 2022.

It is:

– Ban on all New Year celebrations.

– Prohibition of organizing special evenings and programs in hotels, restaurants and tourist establishments.

– Restaurants and cafes close at 11:30 p.m.

– Night curfew on New Year’s Eve from 00:00 to 06:00.

These decisions were made in accordance with the legal provisions governing the management of a state of health emergency, and in the context of reinforcing the preventive measures necessary to combat the spread of the new coronavirus pandemic, capable of protecting citizens’ health, and consolidating the Kingdom’s significant positive results in the fight against the pandemic, according to the press release.

The government asserts that the threat of a pandemic spreading exists, and that the current situation necessitates rigorous adherence by all citizens to all government directives and health-related preventative measures.
