Morocco and The Basque Country Explore Investment Opportunities in the Fishing Sector

An important delegation of businessmen from the Basque Country was briefed, Monday in Rabat, on various investment opportunities in Morocco in the field of fishing and maritime industry.

During a meeting with the Secretary-General of the Maritime Fishing Sector at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Zakia Driouich, the delegation of the Basque Country, headed by Maria Tato, expressed its desire to develop cooperation between Morocco and the Basque Country, especially in the sector of transformation and valorization of marine fishing products and recycling plastic from fishing activities.

In a speech on the occasion, Driouich said that this meeting constitutes an appropriate opportunity for exchange on all possibilities for cooperation between Morocco and the Basque Country in the fishing sector.

“We are ready to engage in the process of exchanging experiences between Morocco and the Basque Country,” she added, noting that fishing is one of the most promising export sectors in Moroccan economy.

Moreover, Driouich stressed that the two parties will work on developing activities related to recycling fishing waste “quickly”, highlighting, in this regard, that the new national strategy for fishing “which is undergoing its final phases” provides an opportunity to combine sustainability with protecting the environment.

For her part, Tato announced that the delegation will visit the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla to investigate the important potentials of these two regions in the sectors of fishing and aquaculture.

On a final note, she added that the Basque Country delegation will meet, within the framework of this visit, with Moroccan businessmen who part of companies operating in promising sectors for the diversion of fish products.
