Trump Recognizes Morocco’s Sovereignty over Sahara

and Announces Normalization of Israel-Morocco Ties

Morocco becomes the sixth Arab League member to agree to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel

A royal communiqué issued today stated that His Majesty King Mohammed VI spoke by phone with Donald Trump, President of the United States of America.

During this call, the American President informed His Majesty that he had issued a presidential decree in which the United States of America recognizes, for the first time in history, the full sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over the entire Saharan region.

In this context, and as the first incarnation of this important sovereign step, the United States decided to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla which is located in the south of Morocco. This consulate will mainly carry out economic tasks, in order to encourage American investments and advance economic and social development, especially for the benefit of the inhabitants of our southern provinces.

This essential American step comes to reinforce the dynamism of entrenching the “Moroccanity of Sahara”, which has been confirmed by the position of some ally countries which have decided to open consulates in the south Morocco.

On this occasion, His Majesty the King expressed to the US President, on behalf of all Moroccans, the most sincere expressions of gratitude to the United States of America for this historic position.

On his part, Trump considers that Morocco’s serious, credible and realistic autonomy proposal is the only basis for a just and lasting solution.

The American President has announced today on Twitter that he has signed “a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara. Morocco’s serious, credible and realistic autonomy proposal is the ONLY basis for a just and lasting solution for enduring peace and prosperity!”

He also explains in another tweet that “Morocco recognized the United States in 1777. It is thus fitting we recognize its sovereignty over the Western Sahara”.

On a last note, Trump has announced that Morocco has normalized diplomatic ties with Israel. In another tweet, he says: “Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East! ”

It should be noted that, following this huge political step, Morocco becomes the sixth Arab League member to agree to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel along with Egypt and Jordan.
