Following the US official recognition of Moroccan Sahara as part of Morocco’s sovereignty over its territories, the Donald Trump Administration has notified Congress of a proposed $1 Billion arms deal which has fueled huge debate over the intentions of Trump to lead to a regional arms race reported Global Finance Magazine.

The arms sales could be a political double-edged sword, says Emily Hawthorne, Middle East and North Africa analyst at Stratford.

She further added that better access to US military equipment is an added benefit for countries like Morocco and UAE.

Morocco-US relations have always been strong. Morocco and the United States share common concerns and consult closely on security, political, and economic issues and sustainable development.

The United States designated Morocco a Major Non-Nato Ally in 2004, and the US and Moroccan militaries hold joint exercises and training.

Morocco is a strong partner in counterterrorism efforts and works closely with US law enforcement to safeguard both countries’ national security interests.

The US and Morocco coordinate their efforts to promote regional stability and security, including through the Global Counterterrorism Forum and the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
