Mr. André Azoulay, HM the King’s Advisor, declared on Tuesday at Dar Souiri that the discovery of 150,000-year-old jewels at the Bizmoune cave was “one of the most exhilarating” occasions in Essaouira’s rich heritage. “It is exhilarating because this [jewelry] set, the world’s oldest known to date, embodies the values through which Essaouira has chosen […]

“It is exhilarating because this [jewelry] set, the world’s oldest known to date, embodies the values through which Essaouira has chosen to identify its rebirth over the past thirty years,” Mr. Azoulay said at an information day dedicated to this discovery.

In this sense, he emphasized that this is the first-ever evidence of recorded human history. “The existence of structured relationships between members of the same group or different groups,” illustrating a “form of language”. This portrays modern-day Morocco as a place with “tremendous history” for both Earth and humanity.

“The exceptional performance achieved in Essaouira must be registered,” said Mr. Azoulay who gave a heartfelt tribute to Abdeljalil Bouzouggar, Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology at INSAP (Rabat), who led a team of scholars from France, the United States, Germany, and Spain.
