COVID-19 Update: FDA Authorizes First COVID-19 Test for Self-Testing at Home

On November 17th, the food and drug administration of the United States issued the first COVID-19 diagnostic test for self-testing at home and that provides results in about 30 minutes which is a very short time comparing to the PCR test that usually takes approximately 10-15 hours once the sample is received.

This new testing approach was developed by the Lucira health company, it has been authorized to only be used on individuals who are 14 and older, it can only be used one time and it costs less than 50 dollars.

The test works by swirling the self-collected sample swab in a vial that is then placed in the test unit. In 30 minutes or less, the results can be read directly from the test unit’s light-up display that shows whether a person is positive or negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
