The representative of Germany, who was reading a statement on behalf of the EU countries when adopting the Commission’s decision on the Moroccan Sahara issue, confirmed that the EU remains “concerned” about the implications of the Western Sahara conflict on regional security and cooperation.

One of the diplomats indicated that the EU welcomes “the commitment of the UN Secretary-General to start the negotiations over again with new spirit leading to resume the political process, with the aim of reaching a just, permanent and mutually acceptable political solution” to the Western Sahara conflict.

The diplomat added that the EU continues “to encourage the parties to show political will and work in an appropriate atmosphere for dialogue in order to enter a new stage of negotiations, in good faith, without any preconditions, and to take note of the efforts and new developments that have been taking place since 2006.”

He also stressed that “it is important for the parties to show more political will in order to reach a solution” to the regional conflict.

The EU praised the efforts and work accomplished by Horst Köhler the former Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the UN for the Western Sahara, especially by holding two round tables in Geneva between Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the separatist front “Polisario”. The EU stressed that it looks forward to the appointment of a new personal envoy to continue the political process led by the UN.
