Morocco is taking part in the work of the 5th Conference of the Arab Parliament and Speakers of Arab Parliaments and Assemblies, which opened on Saturday at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo.

The meeting is expected to discuss the document prepared by the Arab Parliament on the issue of food security entitled “A Parliamentary Vision for Strengthening Arab Food Security”.

The Kingdom is represented at this event by a delegation led by the first vice-president of the House of Representatives, Mohamed Sabari, and composed of the head of the group of the National Rally of Independents (RNI) in the House of Councillors, member of the parliamentary caucus of the Arab Parliament and chairman of the Arab Food Security Committee, Mohamed El Bakkoury, the head of the department of bilateral relations and partnership in the House of Representatives, Mohsine Mounjid, as well as Mrs. Touria Hamam, general councillor at the House of Councillors.

Addressing the conference, the Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Adel Al-Assoumi, stressed that the conference is taking place at a time when the Arab nation is facing many crises, recalling that the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic had not yet disappeared when the Russian-Ukrainian crisis erupted, imposing considerable challenges on Arab economies.

Among the challenges that need to be addressed urgently is the vital issue of Arab food security, which is a central pillar of Arab national security, he added.

“In this context, we wanted Arab parliamentarians to contribute to solving this problem,” he said, noting that the document on which parliamentarians are expected to focus during this session addresses the most important challenges facing Arab countries in terms of food insecurity, as well as proposing some avenues for solving this problem

In this regard, Al-Assoumi called for greater integration and cooperation among Arab countries to achieve food self-sufficiency, warning that the pressing crises facing the world will continue as long as the global geopolitical situation remains inflamed and the world economy struggles to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

For his part, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said that the institutions of representation, legislation and control embodied by Arab parliaments, represent an essential pillar of the system of good governance, which is based on the participation of people in the political and development process.

Emphasising the need to strengthen the role of these institutions, he pointed out that economic difficulties, rising inflation rates, stagnation and the high cost of living have social consequences that have already been observed throughout the world.

In this situation, Aboul Gheit called for special attention to be given to issues of concern to the Arab nation as a whole and which directly affect the lives of Arab citizens.

The Moroccan parliament, represented by the Moroccan parliamentary section in the Arab Parliament, will take part from January 20 to 22 in the work of the third session under the third legislature, held at the headquarters of the Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo.

The parliament said in a statement that the session’s agenda will include meetings of the Standing Committees and subcommittees as well as a plenary session that will be devoted to the examination of current Arab issues, the follow-up of political and social developments on the regional and international stage, in order to unify the positions of the Arab States on them and strengthen cooperative Arab action.

Ahmed Ched, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee, and Mohammed Bakouri, the chairman of the Arab Food Security Committee, who represents the Moroccan parliamentary section in the Foreign Affairs, Political and National Security Committee, are the representatives of the Moroccan Parliament in the Arab Parliament’s organizational structures, according to the statement.

Additionally, MP Mohamed Ayyach represents the Moroccan Parliament in the Committee on Legislative, Legal, and Human Rights Affairs and MP Khadija Hajjoubi serves as vice-chair of the Committee on Social, Educational, Cultural, Women, and Youth Affairs.

According to the statement, the Moroccan parliamentary section members continue to participate in the work of the Commission for Palestine and watch the developments of the situation and the choices it makes in order to defend the important and vital Arab causes.

The 48th session of the Arab Labor Conference will take place in Cairo, Egypt, from September 18 to 25, and is being attended by a tripartite delegation from Morocco led by Younes Sekkouri, Minister of Economic Inclusion.

According to a communiqué from the Ministry of Economic inclusion Younes Sekkouri, the delegation consists of officials from the government, professional employers’ organizations, and the union centers with the highest representation.

More than 500 representatives from 20 member states will attend the current session, which will be presided over by the Kingdom of Morocco, according to the same source (ministers of labor, heads of labor unions, and general secretaries of Arab trade union centers).

This session’s agenda covers a number of topics relating to the pressing issues facing the Arab labor market in the post-Covid-19 phase, particularly the significance of the Arab Labor Organization supporting Arab efforts to achieve a swift and thorough economic recovery in the post-pandemic stage.

Aspects like entrepreneurship, employability, artificial intelligence, new job models, digitalization, and social protection system governance will also be highlighted at the conference.

The statement stated that Arab pioneers in the workplace will be acknowledged at the Arab Labor Organization’s initiative in recognition of their significant achievements at the national and international levels.
