An official at the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates said that “a ministerial delegation is preparing to visit Libya, on Wednesday, in order to hold discussions on ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.”

It should be noted in this context that Morocco played an important role in bringing together all Libyan factions. The country has also hosted, in recent years, a series of dialogue rounds, the last of which was the dialogue sessions between the Libyan Parliament and the High Council of State, in late January in Bouznika.

After years of armed conflict, the Libyan crisis is witnessing a breakthrough in the recent period after the parties managed to ratify a unified transitional authority which took office on March 16th.

Libyans hope that the unified authority will contribute to ending years of armed fight over legitimacy and power in their oil-rich country.

This discussion comes following HM King of Morocco Mohammed VI’s phone call with Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu during which they agreed to set up working groups that will tackle issues related to collaboration agreements in areas of investment, agriculture, water, environment, tourism, science, innovation, and energy.

The working groups will rather engage in online video conferences due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, Israel expects a high-level Moroccan delegation to come possibly this February to finalize the terms of these agreements. On their part, an Israeli delegation, led by Ben Shabbat will also come to Morocco during the same month.

During their phone call, both Nasser Bourita and Ben Shabbat had the chance to reiterate the opportunities at hand concerning the great potential of collaboration which will benefit not only Morocco and Israel, but also the whole region.
