The Dominican Minister of External Relations, Roberto Alvarez, wrote to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God help Him, on behalf of the President of the Dominican Republic, His Excellency Mr. Luis Abinader, to inform him of his country’s stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, which was released on Saturday.

In this regard, the Dominican Republic “reiterates its absolute recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara,” the same source continued, noting that the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Relations “considers favorably” “the opening of a Dominican consulate in the city of Dakhla.”

The same source emphasized that the Dominican Republic “reaffirms that the autonomy initiative presented by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007 constitutes the realistic, credible, and serious solution for reaching a negotiated agreement between the parties.”

The press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates concluded that the Dominican minister also informed his Moroccan counterpart that “President Luis Abinader has expressed the wish to pay a state visit to the Kingdom of Morocco, in order to further strengthen political, commercial, and cooperation ties” between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Dominican Republic.

This information was made public by Amaury Justo Duarte, the Dominican Republic’s ambassador to Morocco, who noted that it will be a significant development for the exchange and relations between the two countries.

A key political step to strengthen commercial and cultural connections is the establishment of a direct airline between Casablanca and Santo Domingo. It will offer a practical and effective mode of transit, fostering business and travel between the two nations.

The expanding trade ties between Morocco and the Dominican Republic were also underlined by Ambassador Justo Duarte. Rum, tobacco, avocados, pineapples, and other goods are prospective exports from the Dominican Republic to Morocco, while imports from Morocco include wine and fish. Due to the lack of a visa requirement, he claimed that Moroccans routinely travel to the Dominican Republic.

Despite the small Dominican diaspora’s presence in Morocco, migration is not the primary emphasis of the two countries’ relationship. Instead, it emphasizes developing diplomatic relationships, fostering cultural exchanges, and strengthening economic links.

The Dominican Republic hopes to build deeper ties and mutually beneficial relationships with Central America and Morocco by acting as a link between the two regions. This will create new possibilities for the two countries to expand and collaborate.

In this regard, the Dominican Republic reaffirmed its support for the Kingdom’s efforts in favor of a “credible and acceptable” political settlement for the Sahara through its permanent mission to the United Nations.

The Dominican envoy to the United Nations also stated that his country “appreciates, at their true value,” the UN Secretary General’s efforts to find a realistic and long-term solution to the situation in the Moroccan Sahara with all parties involved.

Milenko Skoknic, Chile’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative, pleaded for a solution that will help strengthen stability and security in the region, which is “currently facing increasing security threats” and “has been impacted by covid-19 in its various dimensions, like all regions of the world.”

The resolution of this conflict, which has lasted over 40 years, will benefit not only international and regional security, but also sustainable development processes and the 2030 Agenda.

It’s also critical to emphasize the need of all conflict parties “renewing their commitment in order to take the political process ahead,” he said.
