The assembly, held every two years, is a significant event where Morocco aims to advocate for its candidacy to the IMO Council for the term 2024-2025. This endeavor is part of Morocco’s commitment to contributing actively to the IMO’s mission, having been a member since 1962.

Given Morocco’s strategic maritime position along the Mediterranean and Atlantic, boasting a coastline of over 3,500 kilometers, the country plays a crucial role in the IMO’s global representation. The current session is particularly pivotal for Morocco as it seeks re-election to the IMO Council, alongside nations such as Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Egypt, and Qatar.

The IMO Council, responsible for ensuring diverse global representation, holds a vital role in the organization’s core missions, including addressing specific interests in maritime transport, ensuring worldwide geographical representation, and approving measures for new organizational observers.

The ongoing assembly is poised to make important decisions, including the adoption of the Organization’s Strategic Plan for 2024-2029 and the approval of the budget and work program for 2024-2025. Additionally, the assembly will decide on the appointment of Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco from the Republic of Panama as the IMO Secretary-General, succeeding South Korean Kitack Lim.

This diplomatic effort follows King Muhammad VI’s recent emphasis on the Atlantic dimension of the country during his address on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the Green March. As Morocco engages in bilateral meetings and strategic discussions at the IMO assembly, the outcomes will shape the nation’s maritime trajectory on the global stage.

With this decision, the British court system upholds the legality of the partnership agreement between Morocco and the UK, which benefits the people and the economic growth of every area of the Kingdom, from the north to the south, without exception.

By failing to persuade the British justice to reexamine the post-Brexit trade agreement, which was signed and approved by the two Kingdoms, this verdict deals a further blow to those who want to undermine the Kingdom’s territorial integrity.

The British government confirmed its commitment to maintaining the collaboration with Morocco as soon as the judgement was made public.

“We appreciate today’s decision. To maximize the £2.7 billion in trade that currently exists between our two countries, we will continue to collaborate closely with Morocco “a representative of the UK Department for International Trade stated.

Next year, he promised, “We look forward to continuing our exchanges with our Moroccan counterparts through the Association Council.”

The Morocco-UK Association Agreement, which was signed on October 26 in London, becomes effective on January 1 of 2021.

The Agreement reinstates all of the effects that the two nations gave each other through the Morocco-EU Association Agreement within the scope of bilateral ties. As a result, it guarantees that commercial relations between Morocco and London UK would continue until December 31, 2020.

The Agreement serves as a guarantee for Moroccan and British businesses conducting economic and trade relations in all sectors of cooperation and covering the entire Kingdom by enabling the two Kingdoms to settle definitively into a structured strategic partnership, endowed with operational and institutionalized cooperation instruments, and driven by a shared ambition.

The Ministers emphasized their common vision for a strategic partnership between the two nations through improved political engagement, deeper economic and security cooperation, and the promotion of human and cultural linkages during their conversations.

In this respect, the two nations adopted a joint political declaration and signed two resolutions pertaining to the establishment of the key mechanisms of the United Kingdom-Morocco New Partnership Agreement, namely the Council and the Partnership Committee, which were signed in 2019.

A subcommittee on commerce, investment, services, farming, fishing, sanitary and phytosanitary issues, and customs was also constituted.

The two parties also agreed to keep working together in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

Mr. Bourita and Ms. Truss used this opportunity to underscore the two kingdoms’ long history of amicable and mutually beneficial cooperation. They paid respect to the 300th anniversary of the signing of the first trade deal between Morocco and the United Kingdom, which took place in Fez on January 23, 1721.

Ms. Truss used this opportunity to express her gratitude on behalf of the British government for Morocco’s reforms, which have resulted in a stronger, more open, and dynamic Moroccan society and economy under His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s leadership. It also praised the Kingdom’s vaccination campaign as a triumph in the fight against the “Covid-19” outbreak.

Mr. Bourita, speaking on behalf of the Moroccan government, thanked the UK for its support in launching the Moroccan Vaccine Manufacturing Initiative, which has enabled Morocco and Africa to improve their health while also achieving economic results and high-efficiency positions in the productive sectors.

Mr. Bourita also held interesting discussions with Mr. James Cleverly, Secretary of State for the Middle East and North Africa at the UK’s Office for Foreign, Commonwealth and International Development.

Morocco and the United Kingdom also convened the first meeting of the Collaboration Council, which will serve as a platform for the two countries’ economic partnership to grow.
