Jerusalem Post: Morocco Could Be The Right Fit In Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

“Morocco’s politics, geography and identity provide it with an opportunity to assist and support on a wide variety of issues that are key to advancing peace.”

In the midst of the current confrontations taking place in al-Quds, the Israeli Jerusalem Post published an article prepared by Roee Kibrik and Nimrod Goren, two experts at the Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies “Mitvim”, talking about the important role that Morocco can play to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in general.

According to the article, in light of the tension now occurring in al-Quds and the increasing international concern over what is happening in the holy city, “Morocco could possibly be the right fit to step into this void given its recently renewed diplomatic ties with Israel.”

The article added that Morocco is committed to the Palestinian cause and is one of the defenders of preserving the Islamic holy sites in the city, given that His Majesty King Mohammed VI is considered the Commander of the Faithful, Chairman of al-Quds Committee, and a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Morocco has also been a member of the Arab League since 1958, and thus all these roles make Morocco closely related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

For the two authors, Morocco’s background in supporting peace also played an important role in bringing peace to the Middle East, and as an example, the late King Hassan II mediated peace between Israel and Egypt in the 1970s as he was always involved in “facilitating communication between rival actors and providing an ideal meeting venue for initial stages of negotiations.”

In this regard, the article highlighted the reasons that may help Morocco play an important role in bringing about peace between Israelis and Palestinians, among them, the fact that there are about a million Moroccan Jews in Israel. Moreover, there is also Morocco’s renewal of ties with Israel which the Kingdom can use as a bridge to fill the gap between Israelis and Palestinians.

Although Morocco cannot alone solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the article says, “Morocco’s politics, geography and identity provide it with an opportunity to assist and support on a wide variety of issues that are key to advancing peace.”

The article finally indicated that Morocco can mobilize Israeli support for peace by relying on a significant number of influential Moroccan Jews, adding, on the other hand, that in the event that the two conflicting parties, namely Israel and Palestine, are led by a desire to reach a solution to the conflict, they will find in Morocco a reliable ally.
