5th AU Training Cycle for Election Observers Starts in Rabat

Morocco hosts AU program to strengthen electoral transparency, inclusion, and digital integrity in Africa.

The fifth African Union training cycle for election observers has officially opened in Rabat, marking a new step in efforts to strengthen electoral transparency across Africa.

This flagship program reflects five years of cooperation between Morocco and the African Union’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has become a key platform for building skills and promoting credible elections on the continent.

The current training session runs until April 25. It highlights Morocco’s continued commitment to supporting democratic processes in Africa, in line with the vision of King Mohammed VI for a stable and inclusive continent.

This year’s cycle places strong emphasis on inclusion, with increased participation from women and young people. Organizers say this approach helps ensure that election observation reflects the diversity of African societies.

The program also introduces a new module focused on digital challenges in elections. It trains observers to detect “deepfake” content and other forms of AI-generated misinformation that could influence voters during elections.

Officials say the initiative aims to improve the quality of election monitoring and support fair, transparent, and credible electoral processes across Africa.
