Omar Zniber, the ambassador and permanent representative of Morocco in Geneva, stated on Tuesday that through exchanging best practices and creating workable solutions, Morocco is assisting in the development of a more inclusive and equitable global society with regard to migration.

The diplomat made this statement during the 32nd meeting of the Standing Committee on Programs and Finance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which is coordinated under the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration. The Compact “guarantees the dignity, respect, and integration of migrants” with its 23 objectives, he continued.

In February 2023, Morocco has chosen to make a contribution to the IOM Multipartner Migration Fund (MPTF), according to Zniber, who also said that this initiative aims to send a strong political message of collaboration and successful multilateralism in accordance with the spirit and word of the Marrakech Pact.

The largest African and Arab contributor to the MPTF Fund of the IOM, Morocco is further formalizing its pledges with this payment, according to Zniber.

The diplomat continued, “Building on its successes, Morocco has committed itself to ten new commitments by 2026 to pursue the effective implementation of the Pact.”

The diplomat emphasized the necessity of paying close attention to the issue of climate change, pointing out that Africa is the region most impacted by the so-called “climate migrants” and their effects on societal resilience, forced migration, and livelihoods.

“In this context, we note with appreciation that IOM allocates 30% of the operational part of its budget to climate change action and risk reduction considerations,” he said at the occasion, which also featured the presentation of IOM’s 2022 activity report by its director general.

Innovation, prosperity, and sustainable development are all impacted by migration. He stated, “Orderly and humane migration benefits both migrants and societies.”

Geneva – The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, hailed, on Saturday in Geneva, Morocco’s efforts to achieve universal health coverage.

The official emphasized the significance of bolstering primary healthcare and the production of vaccines and medicines, stressing their crucial role in achieving health sovereignty in Africa, during discussions with the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Ait Taleb, on the sidelines of the 76th session of the World Health Assembly (May 21–30).

In this regard, Ghebreyesus voiced his support for the significant reforms implemented by Morocco in this sector, as well as the backing of the entire WHO team.

Based on the Covid-19 pandemic’s experience, which brought about both social and economic changes, he also emphasized the necessity to improve readiness for and reaction to health emergencies.

Ait Taleb, for his part, applauded WHO’s efforts to improve the state of global health while reviewing the creative projects started by Morocco in response to His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s High Directives, particularly with regard to the expansion of social protection and the reform of the healthcare system.

The Kingdom of Morocco will participate in the 46th session of the Human Rights Council, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 22 February to 20 March 2021.

The Ministry of Human Rights and Relations with Parliament stated that this session will be marked by the participation of the Minister responsible for Human Rights and Relations with Parliament, Mustafa Ramid, at a high-level meeting, the Minister will deliver a speech via video conference to examine the results of the protection and promotion of human rights in Morocco as well as the efforts made to deal with the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic in Morocco.

The statement added that Morocco, in addition to this HRC session, will hold a parallel meeting on the theme “Achieving human rights convergence and sustainable development, shared experience, good practice”.

The same source stated that the Kingdom of Morocco, in the context of the reform in which the United Nations is participating in improving the work of the Human Council, is organizing a second meeting on the subject of “responses from countries with the specific procedures, best experiences and challenges”.

These two meetings will be held with the participation of UN experts and representatives of Moroccan national institutions.
