“Morocco sets an example to the region and throughout the world,” says US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo following Morocco’s decisions to resume diplomatic relations with Israel.

In a press statement made Friday, December 11, which came one day after Trump’s declaration of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara, Pompeo applauded the kingdom and Israel’s agreement to normalize ties, seeing it as a “remarkable step toward peace.”

The agreement will permit overflight and direct flights between Morocco and Israel, and strengthen economic cooperation between both parties, said Pompeo.

Pompeo went on to commend Morocco’s efforts to promote tolerance, from its historical tradition of protecting the Moroccan-Jewish community, the signing of the Marrakech Declaration which champions defending religious minorities in Muslim countries, to Thursday’s peaceful agreement with Israel.

In his statement, Pompeo also commented on the current situation in Morocco’s Sahara region, stating that “only political negotiations are capable of resolving the issues between Morocco and the POLISARIO,” and reiterating full support for Morocco’s autonomy plan.

The Moroccan autonomy initiative proposed to the United Nations in 2007 suggests that the Sahrawi people would run a government under the kingdom’s sovereignty.

Would the Biden Administration Follow Trump’s Steps?

Donald Trump has recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region. Would the president-elect Joe Biden follow in those steps and continue to support Morocco’s claim?

United States Ambassador to Morocco David Fischer answered the question today, December 12, during a press conference in Rabat, following Trump’s recognition of the Moroccan Sahara.

The US Secretary had stated the following on the 11th of December: “Morocco’s efforts to promote tolerance – from its historical tradition of protecting its Jewish minority to signing the Marrakech Declaration to yesterday’s agreement with Israel – are a model for the region and for the world as a whole,” adding that “The United States, Israel and Morocco have chosen peace and the world is a better place,” further praising the decision to resume diplomatic relations between Israel and Morocco as another remarkable step towards peace.

On the same date, Ambassador Omar Hilale announced at the joint debate of the General Assembly on humanitarian assistance that Morocco is contributing to humanitarian action and peacekeeping operations around the world and particularly in Africa, further highlighting that Morocco has actually always been among the first countries to provide humanitarian aid whenever necessary to people affected by both natural disasters and armed conflicts reaching even more milestones in keeping and achieving peace.

The Trump clan definitely does not want to let go. The head of American diplomacy Mike Pompeo has also refused Tuesday to recognize the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election, by promising a “smooth transition” to a “second” term of Donald Trump! While asked about the measures taken by the State Department, a key national security ministry, to facilitate the transition with the President-elect’s teams, he replied: “There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration”.

“We will count all the votes,” he added at a press conference, assuring that leaders around the world were aware that this was a “legal process” which “takes time”. “The world must be fully confident that the transition necessary for the State Department to be effectively operational today and effectively operational with the president who will be in office on January 20 afternoon will be a successful transition,” continued the Secretary of State.

Many leaders of countries allied with the United States, from France to the United Kingdom, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel, congratulated Joe Biden on his election. But the outgoing Republican president refuses to recognize his defeat and has promised to fight in court to obtain a reversal of the results, without however providing the slightest proof of the massive “frauds” he denounces.

In the Republican camp, a handful of moderate senators recognized the Democrat’s victory, another handful of hawks agreed with Donald Trump, while the majority stress that it is in his right to consider appeal. Mike Pompeo, one of the ministers most loyal to the billionaire, thus seems to position himself among the die-hards of the Trumpist camp.
