The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita said, on Tuesday in Rabat, that Morocco “is not a party to the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine”, stressing that the Kingdom “has not participated and does not participate, in any form, in this conflict.”

Following their meetings, Nasser Bourita stated at a joint press conference with Peter Launsky, Austria’s Deputy Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, that Morocco, as a member of the international community, views this conflict as a problem that affects global peace and security and has significant economic and social ramifications.

The Minister stated that the Kingdom’s stance on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is based on the principles of upholding state sovereignty, respecting the territorial integrity of UN members, mediating disputes peacefully, encouraging a positive neighborhood policy, and upholding the fundamentals of international law and the UN Charter.

According to this stance, he continued, “Morocco abstains from voting whenever there is a vote within the UN and its specialized agencies, with the exception of when the resolution concerns the principles of the UN Charter and the principles of international law and according to the four principles it defends.”

He continued by saying that the Kingdom consistently supports these resolutions as long as they are in line with international law and UN resolutions, seek to protect the territorial integrity of States, and call for the use of peaceful measures to settle disputes.

As was the case recently when the Kingdom voted in favor of a resolution in accordance with its frame of reference, namely the UN Charter, the principles of international law, and the resolutions of international legality, Bourita reiterated that Morocco clearly expresses its positions through a positive vote when it comes to the United Nations Charter and those principles.

The Moroccan student Brahim Saadoun, who was given the death penalty by a Donetsk court then freed on September 21, he was welcomed by his mother after his arrival in Casablanca on September 24, 2022, two days after being released as part of a prisoners exchange.

Saadoun thanked the royal families of Morocco and Saudi Arabia in a statement to the media for helping to secure his freedom. “Words fail to capture how I feel. I didn’t believe it at first, and it wasn’t until I got to Saudi Arabia after my release that I truly understood [what was occurring].” he added.

The young Moroccan student also expressed gratitude to the Moroccan community for its assistance throughout the trying time he endured as a war prisoner held in the self-declared, pro-Russia Donetsk People Republic in Eastern Ukraine.

After months of sorrow and anguish, Saadoun’s father thanked King Mohammed VI and expressed his “immense” joy and happiness at finally being able to hold his son in his arms.

“My kid has returned home at last, and we are overjoyed. Since Brahim is still with us today as a result of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s intervention, I would like to take this opportunity to thank him, Tahar Saadoun stated.

Brahim Saadoun was sent to the Gulf nation as part of a prisoner release between Moscow and Kiev thanks to Saudi Arabia’s mediation with Russia.

The Moroccan was one of twelve priority prisoners of war from different nations. The Moroccan student had received a death sentence on June 9, 2022, after being accused by a Donetsk court of taking part in the Ukraine war as a Ukrainian “mercenary.”

Following negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, the Saudi Crown Prince was able to secure the release of ten inmates.
It was announced via a tweet from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official account: Through Prince Mohamed Bin Salman’s intervention, the Saudi Crown Prince was able to secure the release of 10 detainees, who represented five different countries.
Pictures of the convicts’ arrival in Riyadh have several silhouettes that resemble Brahim Saâdoun.
He was certainly one of the 10 detainees who had been freed.

On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly voted strongly to reprove Russia for invading Ukraine, demanding that Russia cease shooting and withdraw its armed forces.

However, Morocco has chosen to not vote on the United Nations General Assembly decision on the crisis between Ukraine and Russia.

According to the ministry’s report for February 26th, 2022, Morocco’s non-participation in this vote cannot be explained by its primitive stance on the situation between Federal Russia and Ukraine.

Given the escalation in the situation between Ukraine and federal Russia, the kingdom of Morocco continues to be concerned and preoccupied.
