According to Moulay Al-Hassan Daki, the King’s Attorney General at the Court of Cassation and Chief Prosecutor, 13,652 of the 20,097 applications for minor marriages submitted in 2022 were authorised, while 6,445 were rejected.
According to Daki, 75,240 complaints about violence against women were received, which resulted in the opening of 25,195 cases and the arrest of 29,698 people.
The Public Prosecutions has been putting Law No. 103.13 on combating violence against women into practice by offering victims’ protection and assistance.
87 cases of human trafficking were reported, and the protective measures outlined in Law No. 27.14 were put into effect.
In cooperation with UNICEF and UNI FEMMES, training sessions were organized in an effort to lower school dropout rates and prevent child marriage.
Since the beginning of these training programs in 2021, fewer girls have left school to get married, from 36,383 in 2021 to 16,383 in 2022.
With 48,742 in 2021 and 29,742 in 2022, the overall number of boys returning to school has also increased.
With the legal age of marriage set by Moudawana at 18, but with the discretion left to judges on a case-by-case basis, Morocco is working to reduce minor marriages.
A High Commission for Planning survey found that between 2004 and 2014, more than 10% of marriages in Morocco involved children under the age of 18.
