Switzerland’s support adds weight to Morocco’s Sahara autonomy plan
Switzerland backs Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara. Switzerland has expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, adding momentum to international backing for Rabat’s initiative on the Sahara.
The position was outlined in a joint communication issued after talks between Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who is on a working visit to Bern.
Support aligns with UN-led political process
Switzerland said it considers Morocco’s autonomy initiative “the most serious, credible and pragmatic basis” to advance a political solution, while also welcoming the latest United Nations Security Council resolution on the issue.
The Swiss government reiterated its support for the UN-led political process, including efforts by the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy.
The statement reflects growing international backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan, which Rabat presents as a framework for a lasting solution within its sovereignty.
