Russia's ambassador says nuclear expertise could support Morocco's healthcare, agriculture and water sectors Russia’s ambassador to Morocco says his country’s nuclear expertise could benefit the Kingdom in areas including healthcare, agriculture and water desalination.
Igor Belyaev told RIA Novosti, the Russian state-owned news agency, that Russia has unique experience in nuclear energy and is among the world’s leaders in developing and applying nuclear technologies. He said the competencies Russia has built up could be useful not only for energy projects but also in several civilian sectors that are priorities for Morocco.
Belyaev pointed to specific applications: nuclear technologies used in radionuclide diagnostics and radiation therapy, in assessing soil erosion, improving fertilizer efficiency, strengthening food security, and in water desalination.
Belyaev also said Morocco’s trust in Russian power engineering technology dates back to the Soviet era, when Soviet equipment was supplied to the Jerada thermal power plant. He said the Moroccan side is well aware of the expertise of Russia’s power engineering sector, noting that Soviet equipment supplied the Jerada plant, and that Russian company Power Machines later took part in equipping the country’s largest hydroelectric power plant, the Al Wahda plant. He said this experience formed a solid foundation for trust in Russian technologies.
Power Machines is today interested not only in maintaining and upgrading equipment it previously supplied, but also in taking part in new energy projects in Morocco, Belyaev said. He added that the company is prepared to offer solutions for rebuilding existing thermal and hydroelectric power plants, as well as supplying equipment needed to build new power generation facilities, which he said opens the door to further developing mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sector.
