For the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award, six candidates were shortlisted. They are American basketball player Stephen Curry, Swedish athlete Armand Duplantis, Frenchman Kylian MbappĂ© and Argentine Lionel Messi. The list also includes Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal and last year’s winner, Dutch F1 driver Max Verstappen.

The nominees were determined by a panel of 1,400 members from the world’s media. The 71 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, namely former sports champions, will determine the winners of these awards, which have been in existence since 2000.

The Laureus World Sports Awards are international sports awards presented each year to athletes in all disciplines who have made the greatest impact on the world of sport in the previous year, as well as to associations or individuals who promote sport for charitable purposes. These awards are presented at a ceremony organised by the Laureus Foundation.
