Guatemala and Panama Reaffirm Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative
Guatemala and Panama have reasserted their support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing confidence in the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a credible and feasible basis for reaching a lasting political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Speaking before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, representatives of both countries reaffirmed their respective positions in support of Morocco’s efforts to resolve the regional dispute through a peaceful process under the auspices of the United Nations.
Guatemala emphasized its support for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, describing the autonomy plan presented by Rabat as “a realistic, credible and serious basis” for achieving a definitive solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
The Guatemalan representative also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, stressing the importance of a peaceful settlement not only for the inhabitants of the Sahara but also for the stability, security, and integration of the Maghreb region.
In a similar statement, Panama reiterated its support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as a “feasible basis” for reaching a definitive settlement.
“We believe that the Moroccan autonomy initiative constitutes a feasible basis for the process led under the auspices of the United Nations”, Panama’s representative stated before the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly.
The Panamanian diplomat further reaffirmed her country’s support for Morocco’s efforts to achieve a peaceful and mutually acceptable solution to the regional dispute. She also emphasized that the process must be conducted in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2797.
The statements from Guatemala and Panama reflect their continued diplomatic support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue and underscore the importance both countries attach to a negotiated settlement within the United Nations framework.
Their declarations come amid ongoing international efforts to advance a political solution to the dispute, with the autonomy initiative remaining central to Morocco’s diplomatic approach.
Both countries stressed the need for a peaceful resolution, highlighting its potential contribution to regional stability and cooperation across the Maghreb.
