Morocco reaffirms absolute solidarity with Saudi Arabia over Houthi attacks. At the UN Security Council, Morocco reaffirmed its “absolute solidarity” with Saudi Arabia and condemned what it called “cowardly” Houthi attacks.
Morocco reaffirmed its “support and absolute solidarity” with Saudi Arabia following what it described as “cowardly” attacks by Houthi rebels, during a UN Security Council Arria-formula meeting on Thursday.
“I wish to reaffirm, on behalf of the Kingdom of Morocco, our support and absolute solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the cowardly attacks perpetrated by the Houthi group”, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said during the meeting, organized by Bahrain, a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
Morocco also condemned “in the strongest terms” the Houthi attack against the holy city of Mecca.
Bourita said Morocco supports “all measures taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protect its territory and ensure the safety of its population”.
Bourita Raises Alarm Over Strait Security
The meeting was held under the theme “Safe seas, shared security: Protecting freedom of navigation in an evolving security environment”.
Bourita said the Houthi attempt to control the Bab al-Mandab Strait “reminds us that the security of international straits is no longer limited to states alone but is now threatened by non-state actors”.
He said the situation requires the international community to reconsider its approach.
Bourita also pointed to the Strait of Hormuz crisis, describing it as a “bitter reality”: despite the existence of a legal framework, the international community still lacks mechanisms capable of preventing crises or managing them when they arise.
The meeting brought together Security Council members, UN member states and subject-matter experts. It also highlighted the need to rapidly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reach a swift solution to the crisis in the Strait of Bab al-Mandab.
