Germany Eyes Investment in Moroccan Sahara
Wadephul in Rabat: "The Moroccan Sahara is an economic powerhouse" — and Germany wants in. Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann David Wadephul, stated Thursday that Germany is ready to support economic development in Morocco’s Southern Provinces — and to encourage more German companies to invest there. Speaking at a joint press briefing with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita following the second session of the Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue between Morocco and Germany, Wadephul described Morocco as the region’s economic powerhouse, noting that the Kingdom’s economic strengths, particularly in the Moroccan Sahara, are likely to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries.
Germany’s support, he said, is aimed at achieving sustainable development and creating a conducive environment for investment in the Southern Provinces.
Genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most promising solution.

Berlin backs the autonomy plan
On the political dimension, Wadephul welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 in October 2025. He described genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the most promising path to a definitive resolution of the regional dispute, and indicated that Germany supports the Security Council’s efforts encouraging all involved parties to engage in conflict resolution on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy plan.
