GITEX Future Health Africa: Morocco Signs $5 Million Grant to GAVI Vaccine Alliance
An agreement for a $5 million grant from Morocco to the GAVI Vaccine Alliance was signed on Monday in Casablanca, on the sidelines of the 1st GITEX Future Health Africa.
The agreement was inked by Director of the Treasury and External Finance Mohammed Tarik Bchir, representing Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah, as well as by GAVI’s Managing Director for Donor Relations, Advocacy, and Fund raising Björn Gillsäter, according to the Moroccan Ministry of Economy and Finance’s website.
During the signing ceremony, attended by Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tehraoui, Bchir emphasized that this agreement is rooted in a spirit of shared responsibility and active solidarity, reflecting Morocco’s commitment, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to vaccine equity and the strengthening of health systems.
In this regard, he highlighted GAVI’s role as a trusted partner and major player in global health, noting the significant results achieved since its creation, particularly in the areas of vaccination and reducing infant mortality.
For his part, Gillsater expressed his gratitude to Moroccan authorities for their contribution, as the Kingdom is the first country in North Africa to provide financial support to the Alliance.
This commitment, he continued, reflects a strategic vision that deems investment in vaccination a lever for stability, prosperity, and development for the African continent.
Gillsater also praised Morocco’s performance in terms of vaccination coverage, highlighting the country’s experience as a model to be shared with other African nations.
Held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this edition of GITEX Future Health Africa runs through May 6 under the theme “Digitising Africa’s Healthcare Future: Essential Care Advancing With AI”.
