Denmark praised Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara as a good basis for a mutually agreed solution Friday, as the two countries reaffirmed the strategic nature of their relations and moved toward a new strategic partnership.
The position was expressed during a meeting between Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
Rasmussen said Denmark, in line with the European Union’s position, welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797.
He also described Morocco’s autonomy proposal as “credible”, saying it makes a “serious and essential contribution” to the ongoing UN process and is a “good basis for a mutually agreed solution by all parties”.
Denmark and Morocco Move Toward Strategic Partnership
The two ministers highlighted the historical, excellent and strategic nature of relations between the two Kingdoms and agreed on an upcoming visit by Rasmussen to Morocco to conclude a strategic partnership focused on strengthening political dialogue.
Rasmussen described Morocco as a “reliable partner” and a “driver for growth and development” in the region and across Africa.
The planned partnership will also seek to strengthen economic and commercial ties in several sectors, including water technologies, renewable energies, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and agri-food, as well as infrastructure.
The ministers also noted the importance of Danish investments in Morocco and agreed to further promote contacts between companies and the business community through the creation of a Moroccan-Danish business council.
Migration will also form part of the new partnership, aimed at consolidating cooperation between the two countries and strengthening it through tailored mechanisms and tools.
Through its position, Denmark, a member of the UN Security Council, reaffirmed its support for the international momentum behind Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the Moroccan autonomy plan.
