Jamaica has welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, saying genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute “a most feasible solution” to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The position was expressed Wednesday in New York by Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Kamina Johnson Smith in a joint communiqué signed with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita following talks on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The communiqué welcomed the resolution’s support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating negotiations based on Morocco’s Autonomy Plan. It also congratulated Morocco on its “diplomatic efforts to secure international consensus and momentum” in favor of the plan under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
During their talks, Bourita and Johnson Smith agreed to continue political consultations between Morocco and Jamaica and coordinate their positions on issues of common interest.
