Mauritius has changed its position on the Moroccan Sahara, calling autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty the most credible solution to the regional dispute.
Mauritius has changed its position on the Moroccan Sahara, with Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful saying Wednesday in New York that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is “the most credible solution” to the dispute.
Ramful made the statement during talks with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Ramful said Mauritius had recently reviewed its position during a Cabinet meeting following the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797.
Mauritius now considers the resolution to be “based on pragmatism” and says autonomy for the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty offers “the most realistic, fairest, and most sustainable solution” to the dispute.
The new position, according to Ramful, comes within the momentum driven by King Mohammed VI and supports autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole solution to what Morocco describes as an artificial regional dispute.
