Morocco and UK Seek Stronger Economic Ties
Morocco and the United Kingdom are exploring closer economic ties. Both sides are looking at ways to boost investment, expand industrial cooperation and strengthen global supply chains.
A roundtable in London on Tuesday, October 20, brought together experts to discuss these issues. ODI Global organized the event with the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS).
The discussion focused on how countries can protect trade and supply chains amid rising geopolitical tensions. Participants also examined the impact of trade barriers and growing economic competition.
Morocco’s Role in Global Trade
The discussions highlighted Morocco’s position as a link between Europe and Africa. Its ports, transport networks and industrial sectors could help companies move goods and reach new markets.
In addition, participants discussed the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Royal Atlantic Initiative. Both featured in conversations about regional trade and stronger economic links across Africa.
Moroccan Ambassador to the United Kingdom Hakim Hajoui stressed the importance of attracting investment. He also called for stronger industrial partnerships, particularly in the maritime sector.
New Research on the Moroccan Economy
The event also featured The Oxford Handbook of the Moroccan Economy, published by Oxford University Press in 2026. Karim El Aynaoui and Arkebe Oqubay co-edited the book.
The publication examines key issues shaping the country’s economy. Meanwhile, the wider discussion looked at how countries can make their industries and supply chains more resilient after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Overall, the meeting highlighted the potential for closer economic cooperation between Morocco and the UK. It also underlined the role of investment, infrastructure and regional trade in responding to changes in the global economy.
