AUSACO Participants Reaffirm Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in Dakhla
Participants in the 3rd Policy Conference of the Coalition for Autonomy in the Sahara (AUSACO), held in Dakhla, have reaffirmed their “full support” for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only political solution to the long-standing regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
In their final declaration, members of AUSACO said the issue is entering what they described as a “turning point” toward a definitive resolution. They also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which they said reinforces the autonomy plan as the main basis for a political settlement. The United Nations Security Council has not been further detailed beyond the reference cited in the declaration.
The participants highlighted what they described as growing international support for Morocco’s position, pointing to the opening of 32 consulates general in Laayoune and Dakhla by countries from different regions of the world.
They also praised development efforts in Morocco’s southern provinces under the New Development Model launched in 2015, citing major infrastructure projects such as the Dakhla Atlantic Port, the Tiznit–Dakhla highway, renewable energy investments, and seawater desalination facilities.
The declaration further emphasized what participants called a stable environment of security and development in the region, alongside increasing economic activity and the hosting of international forums.
The conference included panel discussions focused on future prospects for resolving the dispute, in light of recent diplomatic and institutional developments surrounding the issue.
