Austria backs UN Resolution 2797 and Morocco’s autonomy plan for Sahara
MFA Nasser Bourita and Austria Foreign Minister Austria said on Wednesday that it supports United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025). It stated that real autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be a practical solution to the Sahara issue.
This position was announced in a joint statement after a meeting in Vienna between Austria’s Foreign Minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, and Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, who is visiting Austria.
In the statement, Austria also welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797. The resolution supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to lead negotiations. These talks are based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal and aim to reach a fair, lasting, and acceptable solution to the Sahara dispute.
Austria also praised Morocco’s readiness to explain how this autonomy would work in practice under its sovereignty.
This stronger support from Austria adds to the growing international backing for Morocco’s position on the Sahara. This momentum has been increasing under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and was reinforced by the adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025.
