Canary Islands Back Spain’s Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan
Fernando Clavijo and Karim Achengli The government of the Canary Islands has aligned itself with Spain’s official position by supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most serious, realistic, and credible solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking on Monday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the President of the Canary Islands government, Fernando Clavijo, reaffirmed this stance during a press briefing alongside Karim Achengli, who was visiting with a delegation of institutional and economic representatives from Morocco’s Souss Massa region.
This position follows Spain’s stance expressed after the 13th High-Level Meeting, where it welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, emphasizing that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is a highly feasible solution to the issue.
“We are part of Spain and fully adhere to the decisions taken by our government. We share and respect this position entirely,” Clavijo stated.
He also highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation with Morocco, recalling his three visits to the country. Several trade missions have been organized to boost exchanges and explore opportunities in key sectors such as the blue economy, tourism, academic cooperation, and water management.
