Romania Calls Morocco’s Autonomy Plan “Most Adequate”
Romanian Foreign Minister Dan Neculăescu Romania has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a basis for resolving the Sahara issue. Foreign Minister Dan Neculăescu restated his country’s position in a telephone conversation with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
“The most adequate, serious, credible and realistic basis”. — Dan Neculăescu, Romanian Foreign Minister, on Morocco’s Autonomy Plan
Neculăescu used those words for the plan, saying it offers a basis for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution. He also praised Morocco’s constructive engagement in efforts to resolve the issue.
Bilateral Ties and the Francophonie
Bucharest had already voiced its backing in July. Romanian President Nicușor Dan said then that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could offer a viable solution. Tuesday’s call confirmed that position.
The two ministers also discussed ways to strengthen relations. They expressed their willingness to build on the historic ties of friendship and cooperation between their countries.
The conversation also covered upcoming Francophonie events, including the next Francophonie Summit and Romania’s candidacy for Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).
Morocco first presented the Autonomy Plan in 2007. It remains at the centre of the Kingdom’s diplomatic efforts toward a lasting political solution.
