Mastercard Backs Samsung Pay Launch in Morocco
Samsung Pay arrives in Morocco: no physical card needed for supported payments. Mastercard is backing the launch of Samsung Pay in Morocco, widening consumers’ choice of mobile payments. Eligible Mastercard cardholders at participating banks can now use compatible Samsung devices to pay, and the company says protection is built in.
Samsung Pay draws on tokenisation capabilities Mastercard has already rolled out in Morocco. The technology swaps sensitive card data for a unique digital token, which helps protect payment credentials during transactions. Authentication and protection tools based on risk analysis add further security.
For shoppers, the change is simple: they can pay with a compatible Samsung device and do not need a physical card for supported transactions. Participating financial institutions can offer eligible cardholders an extra digital payment experience, and merchants equipped for contactless payment can accept it.
Mohamed Benomar, Mastercard’s Country Manager for North West Africa, said the launch is “an important new step” toward wider access to secure digital payment experiences, thanks to Mastercard’s tokenisation technology, the Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES). “Beyond introducing a new way to pay,” he said, “our ambition is to make digital payments faster, simpler and safer.”

A Joint Campaign to Drive Everyday Use
Mastercard and Samsung will run a joint campaign in Morocco to speed up the everyday adoption of Samsung Pay. It will pair promotions with consumer awareness actions on paying simply and securely with compatible Samsung devices. The companies say the aim is to support the lasting growth of digital payments in the country.
Lee called the launch another step in Samsung’s commitment to bringing Galaxy users simple, secure and useful innovations. He thanked the participating banks and Mastercard for their trust and collaboration.
The launch also reflects Mastercard’s global ambition to tokenise 100% of online transactions by 2030.
