British Moroccan Society Celebrates 50 Years of UK-Morocco Friendship
The British Moroccan Society (BMS) celebrated on Saturday in Marrakech 50 years of friendship and strengthening ties between the United Kingdom and Morocco, attended by prominent figures from diplomatic, economic, academic, and cultural spheres.
All funds raised during the celebration will go toward supporting education in the High Atlas Mountains, particularly through the Talatast and Ijoukak learning centers, which were inaugurated in September 2025 and are already serving remote villages.
A portion of the funds will also be devoted to the construction of a planned third center.
Speaking on the occasion, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Morocco Alex Pinfield highlighted the significant role played by the BMS over the past fifty years in fostering human and cultural relations between the British and Moroccan peoples.
He particularly recalled BMS’s involvement in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck parts of the Kingdom, noting that the association worked with local authorities to support affected populations and communities.
The British Ambassador also pointed to BMS’ commitment to education, highlighting its support for charitable initiatives aimed at promoting schooling in rural areas, in partnership with local authorities.
For his part, Ali Bahaijoub, a researcher and co-founder of the BMS, underscored the importance of UK-Morocco relations, welcoming the progress achieved over the years across various fields of mutual interest.
He stated that the Society’s 50th anniversary marks a major milestone, emphasizing its contribution to bringing British and Moroccan communities closer through numerous social and solidarity initiatives.
Established in 1976, the British Moroccan Society works to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation between the United Kingdom and Morocco.
Since its inception, it has been dedicated to promoting exchange and mutual understanding between both nations through several social, cultural, and educational initiatives.
