The shooting took place Saturday night in the courtyard of an apartment building on West 31st Street, about a block from the Coney Island boardwalk.
All eight victims were taken to nearby hospitals. A 21-year-old woman was in critical condition, while the others were reported to be stable and expected to survive, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Four Children Among Those Wounded
The four children injured in the shooting are aged 6, 7, 12 and 14, police said.
Authorities said the suspect, who was wearing a black mask, opened fire on the gathering before fleeing the scene.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene but had made no arrests as of Sunday.
Investigation Continues
Police said there were no reports of any disturbances before the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue searching for the suspect.
