Morocco Issues Heatwave Alert as Temperatures Hit 46°C
Morocco's weather service has issued an orange alert for extreme heat and strong winds affecting several provinces. Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange-level weather alert warning of a heatwave and strong wind gusts affecting several provinces from Saturday through Wednesday.
Temperatures are expected to reach 43°C to 46°C in several provinces, including Marrakech, Kenitra, Settat, Beni Mellal, Taroudant, Zagora, Tata, Sidi Slimane, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Rehamna, Khemisset, Youssoufia, Fquih Ben Salah, Aousserd, Sidi Kacem, Chichaoua, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag and Es-Semara.
Dozens of Provinces Under Heat Alert
Maximum temperatures of 40°C to 43°C are forecast in Larache, Ouazzane, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Tiznit, Guelmim, Meknes, Taounate, Khouribga, Sefrou, Tinghir, Errachidia, Taza, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Benslimane, Berrechid, Essaouira, Mediouna, Nouaceur, Sidi Bennour, Safi, El Hajeb, Khenifra, Fez and Moulay Yaacoub.
On Saturday and Sunday, temperatures of 33°C to 38°C are expected in Skhirat-Temara, Casablanca, Mohammedia, Rabat, Salé, El Jadida and Ifrane.
The DGM also forecast temperatures of 41°C to 44°C in the inland areas of Tan-Tan, Tarfaya and Laayoune from Sunday through Wednesday.
Strong Wind Gusts Forecast in Northern Morocco
The weather service also warned of strong wind gusts of 75 to 85 km/h on Saturday in the provinces of Tangier-Assilah and Fahs-Anjra.
The alert remains in effect until 11:00 p.m. on Saturday.
