Morocco Gains Ground as International Support for Moroccan Sahara Autonomy Plan Accelerates
In just one month, around 20 countries have voiced support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Moroccan Sahara, marking a notable shift in diplomatic momentum around the issue.
Among the countries expressing support are Canada, Switzerland, Egypt, Honduras, Ecuador, and Mali, several of which have endorsed the proposal for the first time.
This wave of support follows what Moroccan officials describe as a major diplomatic breakthrough last April, as Morocco continues to promote its autonomy initiative as a realistic and credible solution to the long-standing regional dispute. The proposal has increasingly gained traction across multiple regions, including Europe, the Americas, and Africa, as well as within international organizations.
Key global countries such as Germany, United States, and United Kingdom have reiterated their backing for the Moroccan initiative, describing it as a serious and pragmatic basis for resolving the conflict.
In addition, several African nations; including Gabon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Zambia, and Kenya, have renewed their support, reaffirming the relevance of the autonomy plan.
At the European level, the position of the European Union remains central. While maintaining a balanced stance, the EU continues to emphasize the importance of ongoing political efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful and lasting solution in line with international resolutions. Countries such as Austria and Netherlands have echoed this approach, supporting a realistic and politically viable path forward.
