Senegal Fires Pape Thiaw After World Cup Exit
Pape Thiaw was dismissed as Senegal head coach following the team's exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Senegal have dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw and his technical staff following the national team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) said on Sunday.
The federation said the decision followed an evaluation of the team’s performances and future prospects, concluding that a change was necessary for the future of Senegalese football.
Thiaw, 45, was appointed in 2024 and led Senegal to a continental title in Morocco earlier this year before the victory was later overturned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Senegal has referred the decision to the Court of Arbitration.
The Teranga Lions were eliminated from the World Cup by Belgium despite leading 2-0 until the 83rd minute. The team had also come close to a group-stage exit after defeats to France and Norway.
The federation did not immediately announce a replacement for Thiaw.
