Ten African Nations Gear up for 2026 World Cup in Historic First
Ten African nations secure historic spots at the 2026 World Cup. The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, will mark a major turning point for African football, as the continent will be represented by ten African teams in a historic first after that FIFA’s expanded the tournament to 48 teams.
Nine nations secured direct qualification following the African qualifiers, confirming the rise of African football. Among them are several heavyweights accustomed to major competitions, starting with Morocco, historic semi-finalists in 2022, Senegal, and Ghana.
Other major national teams also answered the call, such as Tunisia and Egypt, confirming their status as benchmarks of African football.
The list of direct qualifiers is completed by Côte d’Ivoire, driven by an ambitious new generation that confirms its consistency at the highest level, South Africa, Cape Verde, and Algeria.
The tenth African ticket was contested during the intercontinental playoffs. At the end of this decisive phase, DR Congo secured a historic qualification, completing the list of African representatives. A landmark performance for this national team.
