Laurent Wehrli Welcomes Reaffirmed Strategic Partnership between Switzerland and Morocco
Head of Switzerland-Morocco Parliamentary Intergroup Laurent Wehrli. Bern – The head of the Switzerland–Morocco parliamentary intergroup, Laurent Wehrli, welcomed the renewed “strategic” partnership between the two countries.
In a post on LinkedIn, he said Switzerland and Morocco are strengthening cooperation in key areas such as the economy, migration, and regional stability. He shared this message during the visit of Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to Bern.
During the visit, Bourita met with Ignazio Cassis and Beat Jans. They discussed ways to boost economic ties, improve migration cooperation, support climate action, and align their views on regional issues, including the Middle East and the Moroccan Sahara.
Wehrli described Morocco as a “key partner in North Africa.” He noted that Morocco ranks as Switzerland’s third-largest trading partner in Africa, with trade reaching nearly one billion Swiss francs in 2025.
He also highlighted Morocco’s political stability and economic potential, calling it an attractive market for Swiss companies. He added that 2026 marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Since January 2025, Switzerland has treated Morocco as a priority country for economic development cooperation. It aims to support the Kingdom’s transition toward a more competitive and sustainable economy.
Wehrli also stressed strong cooperation in climate, science, and innovation. He pointed to a 2022 agreement that helps Switzerland meet its climate goals while encouraging investment in Morocco, along with another deal that supports joint research projects and scientific events in both ountries.
