UK Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as Most Credible Path to Sahara Peace
London – UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper reaffirmed her country’s position on the Moroccan Sahara issue on Thursday, stressing that the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco remains “the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for achieving peace in the region.”
Cooper made the statement after meeting with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, during his visit to London.
She reiterated the United Kingdom’s continued support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, in line with the position expressed during the latest Morocco–UK Strategic Dialogue held in Rabat on June 1, 2025. The joint communiqué from that meeting also called on all parties to engage urgently and constructively in the political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
The United Kingdom confirmed that it will continue its efforts at bilateral, regional, and international levels to support a resolution to the dispute.
Cooper also welcomed the strong bilateral relations between the two countries, noting that the partnership with Morocco brings significant value to both nations, particularly through cooperation opportunities linked to the FIFA World Cup 2030.
