Morocco’s lawyers will resume providing professional services on October 7 after more than four months of stopping work, according to a statement issued by the Association of Bar Associations of Morocco following a meeting in Rabat on September 20.
The association said the stoppage will continue until October 7, when it will be temporarily suspended, allowing lawyers to return to their usual professional activities. The decision followed months of protests and suspended services linked to disagreements over the legal framework governing the profession and provisions the association says affect its independence and position within the justice system.
The return to work, however, does not mean the association is dropping its demands. It stressed that it will continue defending the independence, immunity and self-governance of the legal profession, while protecting gains made for lawyers. The association also linked the choice of October 7 to the upcoming legislative phase and said the next stage should address what it considers shortcomings in the legislative process surrounding the law governing the profession.
The resumption of services is expected to bring an end to a lengthy disruption that affected professional procedures and services carried out by lawyers before courts and other judicial institutions. The association, meanwhile, has said the temporary suspension will provide space for the next phase while maintaining its position on the issues surrounding the profession’s legal framework.
