Patrick Bruel: A Case That Keeps Growing
Once the voice of a generation. Now at the centre of a case involving 13 presumed victims. AFP reports on Patrick Bruel's second day in custody. For decades, Patrick Bruel was the voice of a generation. “Casser la voix”. “Place des grands hommes”. Songs that soundtracked countless French childhoods and filled stadiums across the French-speaking world. On Tuesday, the 67-year-old singer remained in police custody for a second consecutive day, as AFP reported that his garde à vue had been extended by 24 hours on the orders of the Nanterre prosecutor’s office.
He is being questioned in Paris in connection with allegations involving 13 presumed victims. He denies everything.
A Timeline That Stretches Back Decades
What began as a single investigation has grown, methodically and relentlessly, into something far larger. According to AFP, the Nanterre prosecutor’s office — which is centralising all legal procedures targeting the singer — is examining allegations of sexual assault and attempted rape made by three women, covering incidents allegedly dating to 1997, 2000 and 2001.
Beyond those initial allegations, the investigation has expanded to include further claims of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault and harassment, identified as the case developed. An allegation of rape in the northwestern town of Dinard in 2012, made by a woman who was 32 at the time, is among them. Belgian authorities have also filed an official referral following a complaint lodged in Brussels in 2010, involving a woman then aged 40.
Two additional rape complaints were filed as recently as May 27 and June 3, AFP reports, relating to alleged incidents in 2000 and 2008. Television presenter Flavie Flament has separately filed a complaint alleging rape in Paris in 1991, when she was a teenager. Bruel has described that particular allegation as involving a relationship that was, in his words, neither violent nor coerced.
The prosecutor’s office has also reopened an investigation previously dismissed in 2022, covering alleged events in 2015 involving a woman who was 19 at the time.
A Career Placed on Hold
The legal proceedings have already reshaped Bruel’s professional life. Last Friday, under mounting pressure, he announced the cancellation of the majority of his upcoming tour — a celebratory run through his greatest hits that was due to open in Paris in mid-June before moving to summer festivals in Switzerland and Belgium. His Montreal dates were cancelled by the organiser. He has also stepped back from Les Enfoirés, the beloved French charitable collective he has been part of for years.
His lawyers have stated that Bruel had been signalling for weeks his readiness to face investigators, describing his custody as “a great relief” in terms of finally being able to address the allegations through proper judicial channels.
His custody expires Wednesday morning. What comes next will be determined by the Nanterre prosecutor’s office.
